SlateX and Privacy
SlateX is designed to protect your information and let you choose what you share
What is personal data at SlateX?
At SlateX, we firmly believe in and respect fundamental privacy rights and believe that these fundamental rights should not differ depending on the country or region in which you live. We therefore treat any data relating to an identified or identifiable individual as personal data, regardless of where the individual concerned resides. This means that data that can be used to identify you directly (such as your Apple Account identifier) is personal data, and data that cannot be used to identify you directly but can be used to identify you indirectly through reasonable inference (such as your script notes, on-set photos, and continuity comparison records) is also personal data. Depending on what you enter, project records and custom glossaries may contain the names, roles, or other identifiable information of actors, stand-ins, directors, cinematographers, sound recordists, and other crew members. You, or the production company you represent, should determine, based on the actual purposes of processing and applicable law, the permissions and legal bases required to enter, use, sync, and deliver this information.
Personal Data SlateX Collects
We firmly believe that SlateX can provide you with an outstanding digital script supervision experience, and we treat the protection of your privacy as a design prerequisite. Based on our local-first architecture, the data we collect is strictly limited to the minimum necessary.
Your creative content is not used for model training
SlateX uses pre-trained on-device machine learning models to assist with script continuity. We explicitly commit: your scripts, photos, or activity logs will not be uploaded or used to train, fine-tune, or improve our algorithmic models. The copy used as model input is processed only briefly in local memory and is released immediately upon completion; the scripts, photos and records you save remain on your device as described on this page.
Secure, Even Offline
SlateX's local recording features do not depend on a network: even without a network, you can still view and edit content already saved on your device. iCloud sync, local network sync between devices, and the verification and export of subscription entitlements require the relevant conditions to be met before they can be completed.
Account & Sync
When you use Sign in with Apple, Apple provides a stable user identifier dedicated to the developer, which is used to distinguish your account in your iCloud private database. We cannot obtain your real name, email address, or phone number through it. During the sign-in process, Apple will also ask you to confirm whether to share your name and email; if you choose to share, the email address is used only to complete this sign-in, is not written to any storage of this App, and is not sent to anyone; the name you share is stored in your account record, is synced along with the other data, and is used to display your name within the App. You can also choose an image as your account avatar; like your other account information, it is stored on your device and, when sync is enabled, it also goes into your own iCloud private database, and it is used only to display your identity within the App; not setting an avatar does not affect any feature. The identifier string used to distinguish your account is stored in the device's Keychain and may be synced through iCloud Keychain to your other devices signed in to the same Apple Account; uninstalling this App does not guarantee that this record is removed.
Zero-Knowledge Access Architecture
The FDX scripts you import, record entries, and continuity photos are stored locally on your device; if you are signed in and have enabled sync, the same data also goes into your own iCloud private database. Under the security design of Apple CloudKit, the developer does not hold the keys to access private databases. This means we cannot view, decrypt, or access any of your professional content.
No-Tracking Commitment & Diagnostics
We ourselves do not integrate any third-party behavioral tracking SDKs, nor do we collect your usage data. Behavioral data such as your clickstream and usage duration belongs entirely to you. If you choose to share diagnostics with the developer through the device's system settings, the processing of such information is governed by Apple's platform mechanisms and privacy policy.
Data Controller Role Definition
You, or the production company you represent, should determine, based on actual responsibilities, working relationships, and applicable law, the personal information processing responsibility you bear for the content you enter. SlateX provides recording, storage, analysis, and sync features, and does not acquire ownership of the professional content you enter merely by providing this software. For account information, technical support communications, and other personal information that the developer actually receives or processes, we fulfill the corresponding obligations in accordance with this Privacy Policy and applicable law. With respect to the entry, use, and delivery of information concerning third-party natural persons, each participating party bears the corresponding responsibility according to the actual processing relationships.
Your content is stored in your own iCloud private database, and access control is managed by Apple's account system and encryption mechanisms. SlateX does not hold the keys to decrypt your database.
SlateX's Use of Personal Data
We process data locally based on the necessity of providing professional script supervision services:
- Functional Fulfillment: Parse scripts, manage shooting entries, and generate digital call sheets.
- On-device Processing: Utilizes the built-in iOS visual analysis capabilities for image feature extraction and matching.
- User-initiated export: The App will only process data into script reports in PDF, ALE and CSV format and screenplay files in FDX format when you actively click share or export.
Continuity Comparison and On-Device Machine Learning
SlateX’s intelligent features (such as entry comparison) are powered by Apple’s Vision framework and run locally on your device. Consequently, your live photos are analyzed locally on your device without ever being uploaded, eliminating the need for any cloud computing resources.
Script Parsing & File Handling
When you import an FDX script or export a script report (in PDF, ALE, CSV and FDX formats), the parsing and generation themselves are completed on your device, without the need to send content to any external service. Therefore, these processes remain available as usual on set when offline or when the signal is poor. Exporting still requires the verification of subscription entitlements to be completed first, and that verification is performed while your device is online.
SlateX's Sharing of Personal Data
At SlateX, our architecture is designed to keep your professional data private. We follow a zero-sharing principle: your script content, script supervision entries, and continuity materials are not sent to SlateX, nor are they sent to any third-party business interface. These boundaries apply to the professional content you enter in the App. When you actively export, share, or submit technical support materials to us, the relevant content may leave the original device.
Features completed on-device
SlateX's intelligent features are all completed locally on-device and offline, and none of the processing requires external services to perform computations. Please note, however, that if you actively use the iOS system-level share feature to send data to a third-party app, that transmission is not controlled by SlateX.
iCloud private database
Your script supervision data is synced through Apple's CloudKit service and stored in your own iCloud private database. This database belongs to your Apple Account, and only your own account can read its contents; SlateX exists only as a read/write interface, and the developer has no permission to view your original content. This copy arises from synchronisation and does not constitute an independent backup.
Local network sync between devices
To allow on-set materials to flow quickly between the devices in your hands, SlateX supports transferring on-set materials directly between devices over a local network, without the need for the internet or a cellular network. This capability starts only after you complete Sign in with Apple; transmissions mandatorily use session encryption and do not pass through any third party. During sync, your device broadcasts an identifier containing the device name (in the form SlateX-device name) on the local network, by which nearby devices discover one another. Please confirm that the devices participating in the sync and the personnel using them are entitled to receive the relevant materials; access permissions on the receiving device and subsequent use are the responsibility of the person or production company actually managing that device. You can disable the "Local Network" permission in system settings at any time to stop this sync.
Unsolicited sensitive data
When seeking technical support, please do not proactively send screenshots or files containing script content, actor photos, or production budgets. If you nonetheless proactively send such content, we will view it only to the extent necessary to handle your issue, and will process and retain it according to the standards for handling ordinary business communications.
Your Privacy Rights at SlateX
At SlateX, we respect your ability to know, access, correct, transfer, restrict the processing of, and delete your personal data. We provide these rights to every one of our users worldwide. If you choose to exercise these privacy rights, you have the right not to be treated in a discriminatory way by SlateX and to receive the same degree of service quality from SlateX as if you did not exercise them. If you are asked to consent to the processing of your personal data by SlateX, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time.
You can exercise your privacy rights by:
- Right to Access: View your shooting records, on-set photos, and continuity reports via the Script, Scene, and Entry pages within the App
- Right to Rectification: Directly edit script metadata, scene notes, or entry information within the App.
- Right to erasure: Delete specific projects, scenes, or entries within the App, or delete the data associated with your current account by deleting your account
- Right to data portability: You can view and edit your records within the App and use the existing export features to generate script reports as PDF, ALE and CSV files, as well as screenplay files in FDX format. If you request access to, a copy of, or the transfer of your personal information under applicable law, you may do so through the contact details set out in this Policy, and we will handle your request based on the data we actually hold, the technical measures available, and applicable law
- Permission Control: This App requests camera, microphone, photo library, Bluetooth and local network permissions, used respectively for filming and recording video, recording audio, reading and saving on-set photos, connecting third-party Bluetooth timecode generators, and syncing between devices; you can revoke these permissions at any time in the device's system settings.
Because we use a CloudKit private database architecture, your script data is actually stored in your personal iCloud account, and you can also access or delete your iCloud data through Apple's Data & Privacy Portal.
Protection of Personal Data at SlateX
SlateX believes that strong privacy protection requires excellent security as its foundation. For information such as account information and technical support communications that the developer actually processes, we protect it with administrative, technical, and physical safeguards, and we continuously improve these measures.
Our security measures include:
- Sync with iCloud is protected by Apple's encryption mechanisms, and local network sync between devices mandatorily uses session encryption
- Store script data in iCloud private database (security and encryption managed by Apple).
- We do not integrate any third-party tracking SDKs, nor do we collect personal information beyond what is strictly necessary for the App's functionality.
- Continuity comparisons are processed locally on-device, with no need to upload photos to the cloud.
- Secure your account using Sign in with Apple
Boundaries for providing data externally
For professional content that is stored only on your device or in your iCloud private database and that we do not actually hold, we cannot directly provide a copy of it. We will handle relevant requests based on the information we actually hold, applicable law, and valid legal process.
Children and Personal Data
SlateX is a professional production tool for film and television sets, and its users are mainly working adults. We are fully aware of the importance of protecting minors' personal data and set out clear provisions on the applicable age for this App.
Applicable age
SlateX is primarily intended for film and television production professionals and does not target children as a user group. Users must meet the eligibility requirements set out in the applicable laws of their location and the relevant platform rules. SlateX currently does not provide a separate age verification process and does not require users to provide a date of birth; the processing of minors' personal information must still comply with applicable special protection provisions.
Images of minor actors on set
Film and television sets may record the names, photographs, images, and other personal information of minor actors. You, or the production company you represent, should obtain the necessary authorizations or satisfy other applicable lawful processing conditions based on the laws of the filming location, the relevant contracts, and the actual purposes of processing, and should manage the relevant materials in accordance with the requirements for protecting minors' personal information. The appearance of a minor actor in on-set records does not by itself mean that the actor is a SlateX account user.
This App does not proactively identify or distinguish the age of users, and the data of all users is processed and protected according to the same standards described in this Privacy Policy. Records involving minors are likewise to be viewed, corrected, or deleted by you yourself within the App; if you need assistance, you may contact us as described in the "Contact Us" section.
No Targeted Ads
SlateX contains no advertising content targeted at children or adults, nor does it build user profiles for advertising purposes.
Data Transfer
After you enable iCloud sync, the relevant data will be stored and synced through the iCloud service you use. The iCloud service provider, data storage locations, and applicable terms depend on your Apple Account and the corresponding service arrangements. For users of iCloud services operated by local partners in mainland China, the storage and processing of the relevant iCloud data are governed by the corresponding terms and privacy statements of that service.
Apart from the iCloud sync described above and the local network sync between devices that you actively enable, SlateX will not transmit your professional content to any other facility; all business logic processing is completed locally on your device.
Data Retention
SlateX retains personal data only for as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes of collection. Because your filming data is stored in your personal iCloud private database, its retention and deletion are under your own control; iCloud does not keep a separate backup on your behalf. You can delete specific scripts, entries, or media files at any time through the project management features in the App, or initiate the data deletion process associated with your current account by deleting your account.
After you confirm account deletion in the App, SlateX will carry out the data deletion and local cleanup process associated with your current account. Deletions already synced to iCloud will propagate through Apple's CloudKit sync mechanism, and the completion time depends on the network, the device, and the status of the iCloud service. Copies on other devices that have not yet been synced, files you previously exported, and backups not managed by SlateX will not be automatically deleted by this operation.
Deleting your account will not revoke your sign-in authorization on Apple's side on your behalf. If you wish to revoke it as well, open your Apple Account in the device's system settings and stop the authorization for SlateX. This step is provided and managed by Apple; SlateX cannot perform it on your behalf, nor can it confirm whether you have completed it.
Local Storage Technology
SlateX uses on-device local storage technologies to implement its core features.
Necessary local storage
To track script progress, save modifications to continuity entries, and store your preferences, we write this data locally to your device. If you clear these local databases, the App will need to re-sync from your iCloud.
Media & File Cache
Only the account avatar keeps a derived copy in the cache directory of the device sandbox, and this content may be cleared by the system when storage space runs low. Your scripts, shooting records, on-set photos and videos are regular files stored on your device; they are not cleared automatically and are removed only by your own deletion or by uninstalling the App.
Changes to Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. The updated Policy will be published in the App and on the official website, with the update date indicated. If a change involves a material change in the way data is processed, we will prompt you to review it again before it takes effect. Continued use of this application indicates that you accept the updated Policy. We recommend that you review this page periodically to stay informed of the latest Policy.
Contact Us
If you have any questions regarding the exercise of your privacy rights, please contact us at support@slateprotocol.com. Additionally, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the competent supervisory authority.
We will respond to your inquiry as promptly as possible, typically within 7 business days.
